Tracey Dell, founder of The Northampton Colonic Clinic and Colonic irrigation specialist.
Having suffered from bowel problems for years from a stressful career in the City as a broker Tracey turned to Colonic Irrigation to help her. The results were almost instant and Tracey became passionate about the treatment. As a perfectionist Tracey was increasingly frustrated by the lack of clinics locally and opened first the Northampton colonic clinic and then in 2007 the Milton Keynes colonic clinic.
Established now for over seven years The Northampton Colonic Clinic has been featured on BBC TV and radio as well as independent radio stations, Living TV, many newspapers including The Independent.
Tracey says "We were delighted to be approached by the BBC to administer the colonic irrigation treatments on Celebrity Scissorhands. The fact that the BBC wanted us was a wonderful endorsement for our clinics, the BBC have very stringent practitioner requirements and we passed with flying colours!"

What is Colonic Irrigation?
A lot of you may already know what colonics are about so aplogies for preaching to the converted. For those of you who are just getting started here is some information that may be useful.
Colonic irrigation (colonic hydrotherapy) is a gentle internal bath using warm, purified water that can help to eliminate stored faecal matter, gas, mucus and toxic substances from the colon. It's not a new invention, it's been around since about 1500 BC, and is a very natural way of getting rid of matter that the body can't seem to get rid of itself.
The speculum only goes an inch or so into the bottom and the water enters the body very gently.
A colonic can help with
IBS (Irritable Bowel Syndrome)
Allergies and food sensitivities
Flatulence - smelly or otherwise!
Skin problems, facial or body including eczema and psoriasis
Migranes and headaches
Candida (thrush / yeast infections)
ME and chronic fatigue
Addiction issues such as alcohol and drugs
Candida - yeast infections
Arthritis, osteoperosis and other joint problems
Menstrual problems and menopausal symptoms
Body odour including Halitosis
Stress and anxiety
Many people feel better all over, as well as lighter and more comfortable. A colonic is a great kick-start to a diet or detox program.
Wouldn't laxatives do the same job?
The short answer is - No!
The long answer is - No because laxatives don't get rid of the encrusted and dehydrated matter, they just give temporary relief and don't address the reason why you are feeling they way you do.
Having a colonic at either the Northampton Colonic Clinc or Milton Keynes Colonic Clinic means we will look at possible causes, give appropriate advice including dietary and digestive recommendations and help you get to where you want to be. We will also recommend any other courses of action we think you should take such as a specific practitioner who may be able to address a particular issue better than we can.
For example; Jacquey Savoury
can test you for allergies and food intollerances and Christian Baker
can help you address any issues you may have with your relationship with food. These are just examples of the many ways we can possibly help you.
But please note we are not Doctors, you must take responsibility for any health issues you have and you must contact your GP if you have any health concerns.
It's not just for girls!!
You may be surprised to learn that about 40% of our clients are men with a healthy sprinkling of professional sportsmen among them. Men come to see us for many of the same reasons women do - they may want a detox, a kick start to a healthy eating regime, they may have problems with bloating, skin or their bowels in general, or they want a pre-season tune up.
Additional benefits can often be observed throughout the body in the form of clearer skin, more energy and mental clarity, fewer headaches, with circulatory, immune and weight problems often improving, amongst many other positive side effects.
At The Colonic Clinic many of our patients are referred by their GP
or alternative therapist. Why? All our colonic therapists are fully qualified by I-ACT, the International Association of Colonic Therapists, or The Association & Register of Colon Hydrotherapists (ARCH), which gives other health professionals added confidence when recommending our services.
What's so great about colonic hydrotherapy?
Colonic irrigation washes away encrusted waste matter that you can't always get rid of yourself. It can also hydrate the bowel and the rest of the body, helping improve digestion, improve energy levels, reduce bloating and improve constipation.
Are colonics safe?
At our clinic yes! Colonic irrigation has been around for hundreds of years, since 1500 BC, and thousands of colonics have been given safely. The water is pre-filtered and only enters the body using gravity pressure, so it's a gentle procedure.
Other clinics use machines which have preset pressure gauges. We believe that everyones colonic treatment is very personal, and at The Northampton Colonic Clinic your treatment is tailored to meet your individual needs.
For this reason we do not endorse machine led treatments, and our patients that have experienced the machine system agree with us!
The treatment itself is very clean, without any smell.
All equipment is disinfected using hospital approved disinfecting solutions, which kill all viruses, bacteria and fungi to remove any possibility of cross-contamination between clients - an essential precaution in our opinion.
We believe that the cleaning protocol used at our clinic far exceeds those of any clinic we have experienced. Although the procedure is extremely clean all surfaces in the treatment room that could have been touched by a patient are disinfected between treatments, including door handles.
Some clinics boast that they use disposable speculums for their treatments. We believe that disposable speculums pose a greater risk for infection than disinfected reusable speculums. Having said that.......
We also believe that you have the right to choose and we offer both options. We would never dictate to you and always leave you to make your own choice.
Disposable speculums are pre-packed and cannot be sterilised sucessfully using hospital approved disinfectants as they very quickly start to degrade. However careful a clinic is (and believe us we have tried) they cannot totally verify that the environment that the speculum has been packed in is sterile.
We have heard some horror stories of speculums being packed in third world countries where various viruses are very virilent, without care being given to ensure that surfaces the speculum has touched are sterile. Other reasons include the possibility of plastic inserted within the anal area being possibly carciogenic, as well as the fact they are not that comfortable!
For these reasons we do offer disposable speculums but use autoclaved speculums as our preferred equipment. The choice is entirely yours though and we are happy to use which ever you prefer. We are the only colonic clinic in the area offering a choice
rather than dictating our views and not giving you an option. We like to offer you the service we would like to be offered, and we like having a choice!
What happens when I come for an appointment?
We will have sent you a medical questionnaire beforehand, or you will have downloaded one from our site, giving you plenty of time to fill it out at home.
The therapist will go through your information, explain the procedure, and if appropriate continue with the treatment.
The colonic itself takes about 40 minutes during which time water is gently introduced into the colon via the rectum. The therapist may also use special massage techniques to stimulate the release of stored matter. Your modesty is preserved at all times.
The therapist can also advise you of any dietary changes which will help to enhance your treatment. At the end of the treatment we give you a probiotic to maintain the good bacteria in your bowel and support your immune system. You will also go home with a greater knowledge on how your digestive system and body as a whole works with some suggestions as to how you can improve this if appropriate.
Is having a colonic embarrassing?
No. You're covered by a towel during the treatment. Again, unlike other clinics we do not use blankets as they can lead to cross infection. All towels are laundered after each treatment.
Do you treat men?
Of course! Approximately 40% of our client are male, including professional sportsmen who come in just for a detox and feeling of well being. Remember; colonics is what we do all day, everyday, so it's very normal and everyday to us.
How large is the tube?
A lot smaller than everyone anticipates! The speculum is inserted about an inch into the body and is actually quite comfortable.
How often should I have a colonic treatment?
It very much depends on your reason for wanting colonics in the first place. On average, most people find that at least two treatments within two weeks is best to start off with.
During your first treatment you will have approximately 10 gallons of water gently washed in and out, and the therapist will use various water temperatures to see what works best for you.
On your second treatment you will have a between 15 and 20 gallons as your body is more used to the detox.
After that your therapist will recommend when, and if, further treatments are required. Although colonics are not habit forming we prefer not to treat you too often, preferring to give you advice on how you can maintain a healthy colon at home.
Do you have colonics?
Of course - everyone who works here is passionate about colonics and cleansing. We will never recommend something to a client unless we have tried it oursleves and we've been responsible for lots of our clients travelling to Thailand for a weeks extreme detox, including some of the England Rugby Team!
We're proud to say that we did it first and loved it although the first few days were an experience! We'll bore you with the details when you come in to see us if you want to know more!
How do I book?
Telephone is best, we strongly recommend that you book your first two treatments when you ring to ensure you get the recommended two weeks between your first treatments. Our number is 01604 620966.
Is there anyone who shouldn't have a colonic?
Anyone with any ongoing medical issues should check with us before making an appointment. The most common conditions that would preclude you from having a colonic are high or low blood pressure - even if you are on medication it may still not be appropriate - severe anaemia, ulcerative colitis, bleeding piles, anal fissures, some recent surgical procedures or pregnancy. If you are unsure please ring us.
What is the cost of a colonic?
Treatments booked between 9am and 6pm are charged at £65, after 6pm and at weekends treatments are charged at £75. Additional treatments are available for specific conditions such as Candida, these can be discussed with you at your consultation. For example Oxygen treatments can be given at the same time as the colonic and costs an additional £10.
As we give you the opportunity to do some of the paperwork at home before coming to see us we don't need to charge for taking a patient history. After all, the best person to answer questions about your health is you!
More Q&A are here but feel free to give us a ring if you are unsure.
