Colonic Irrigation Questions and Answers
Colonic hydrotherapy is fast becoming one of the most talked about treatments around, especially in Northampton and Milton Keynes, and with so many people talking about it there are lots of questions and pre-conceptions about the treatment.
If you've never had colonics before you might like to check out our Colonic Basics page which includes health issues that may be helped with colonics and lots of other questions and answers.
Here are some of the other common questions we get:
Are colonics habit forming?
No - it is not an addictive treatment although some well known personalities have been known to have treatments more often than they should. A good therapist should refuse treatment if they feel it's innapropriate.
Don't colonics deplete the bodys immune system?
Normally no. If you follow a good diet it's unlikely that we will reduce the level of good intestinal flora, but we always give you a sachet of good bacteria at the end of the treatment so the balance is maintained or in many cases improved.
Should I eat before a treatment?
You should eat as normal before your treatment, although we may be doing some stomach massage so we don't recommend a heavy meal just before your appointment.
It's not a great idea to have alcohol for the rest of the day following your treatment as it will be absorbed into the bloodstream a lot quicker following a detox, and although the feeling of euphoria may be great the potential headache afterwards won't be!
Why do some people need more colonics than another?
The number of treatments you need are all down to your goals, your body, your nutrition and your reasons for wanting treatments in the first place.
We can never tell you beforehand how many treatments you will need as we don't know until we have treated you. However we recommend two initial treatments within 14 days with any further treatments agreed between yourself and your therapist.
Will I loose weight from having a colonic?
If you are looking to loose weight colonics can be a great way of kick starting a diet.
Although many people do loose weight we can't guarantee it. Our best loss has been a stone, with an average loss of three to four pounds. However, if your bowel is dehydrated you may actually absorb water and put on weight, this will only be water weight though and should disappear as the body rebalances itself.
Often your discussions with the therapist, combined with the answers on your questionnaire, can tell us why weight loss isn't happening for you. Your therapist can then point you in the right direction, often a few small changes are all that is needed to help you.
We also offer nutritional and allergy testing which can can very helpful. An intolerance can cause the body to retain weight and by identifying intolerances and improving your digestion you may find weight loss a more achievable goal.
We offer a medically supervised weight reduction clinic for those wanting to loose weight using prescription only medicines.
If you would prefer to loose weight through a sensible diet we recommend The Body Chef. The bodychef freshly prepares, cooks, packages and delivers nutritionally balanced meals direct to your door.
My friends think a colonic involves a hose pipe!
No hose pipes or jet washes here! The speculum only goes into the body about an inch so it's comfortable. We don't use machines and the water enters the body very slowly through gravity pressure only.
Will I be alright to drive after the treatment?
Before their first treatment nearly everyone thinks they will be rushing to the loo for the rest of the day. The reality couldn't be further from the truth!
Most of the detox will happen while you are having the treatment. Any water that hasn't come out during the treatment will come out when you go to the loo immediately after the treatment. All that is happening is gravity causing any water left in the colon to come out when you get up to get changed.
Many of our patients travel quite a distance to get to us and they are fine to get back. You will be fine to go back to work or continue your day as normal.
I'm on my period, is it ok to have a colonic?
For the men out there (about 40% of our clients) please ignore this quesion unless you're just plain nosey!
If you are having your period it's fine to have treatment, we recommend you don't use a tampax but bring a sanitary towel with you and we'll provide a stylish paper G string!! During your period we often use slightly warmer water which can be very comforting and cleansing. Often women report a better colonic during their period as the body is already in a cleansing frame of mind.
If you would prefer not to have a colonic during your period that's fine - just make sure you let us know in plenty of time if you can to avoid the 24 hour cancellation fee.
