Irritable Bowel Syndrome

What is IBS?

Many of our patients come to us with Irritable Bowel Syndrome or IBS.  Help for IBS suffers at the Northampton and Milton Keynes Colonic clinics

The symptoms they display can include the following:

  • Pain in the stomach, either intermittent or constant.
  • Abdominal pain and spasm
  • Diarrhoea
  • Constipation
  • Bloated stomach
  • Rumbling noises and wind
  • Urgency - a need to rush and open the bowels
  • A feeling of incomplete emptying of the bowels
  • Incontinence if a toilet is not nearby
  • A sharp pain felt low down inside the rectum
  • Nausea, belching and vomiting

Despite showing more awareness of IBS, Doctors still find it difficult to accurately diagnose this condition.

We have had doctors confirm to us that up to 80% of the patients they diagnose with IBS have just symptoms, but probably not the actual condition.

IBS symptoms can be caused by many other things, including dehydration in the bowel area (and the body in general), intolerrances to various foods, Candida in the bowel, inbalance of bacteria in the bowel, yeast or gluten intolerrance or stress to name a few.

Most Doctors first option is to prescribe anti spasmodic medication or bulking agents. IBS help from the clinics at Northampton and Milton Keynes

We find that patients on bulking agents appear to respond better long term than those on anti spasmodic drugs.

Why? Because the patient doesn't have IBS, they have one or more of the conditions listed that can mimic some of the IBS symptoms. Bulking agents are not the answer but they do give us a clue as to where the problem lies, as bulking agents provide soft bulk in the bowel along with hydration, which may have been lacking in the patient in the first place.

What can you do for me?

We have years of experience treating patients with IBS or IBS symptoms. Our sucess stories include:
  • A young male patient who was unable to go to work due to debilitating symptoms, now able to work all day and take a date out for a drink which was impossible before.

  • An older lady who hadn't been able to have a bowel movement more than once a week for years, now able to go easily and pain free to the loo almost every day, and she's still improving!

  • A woman in her thirties who had suffered with bloating everytime she ate, who can now wear her 'skinny' jeans when she goes out.
  • Maria who left hospital diagnosed with IBS. After just 1 colonic she felt much better, after 2 she was over the moon. Check out her story on our testimonials page.

Whatever the severity of your symptoms there are significant to you, and can affect your quality of life. Our aim is to get you to the point where your bowels are not forever on your mind and you can go about your daily life just as everyone else does.

How do you do that?

The questionnaire that we send you before your Colonic appointment will give us lots of information about you, your diet and lifestyle, medical problems and symptoms you are experiencing.

When we piece all of that together with the consultation you have with the Colonic therapist very often the answers become quite clear. If appropriate we will give you a Colonic there and then, and the therapist will be able to give you further information and advice once she has reviewed the session.

So you'll just give me a prescription then?

Absolutely not!! We do not prescribe here, we investigate, treat and advise as appropriate.

Our methods aim to be as holistic as possible and we want you to be able to maintain anything we do for you at home without the use of drugs. Often we will give you homework to do, which may mean including or excluding various foods, as well as changing eating and drinking habits. We may also recommend you see our Nutritionist for a series of tests if you haven't already had these done.

It won't be anything you can't handle and we're always here to help with further advice as and when you need it.

How often do I need to come and see you?

It all depends on the severity, how long you have been suffering from the condition, your general health and your keeness to carry out your homework!

We always recommend that patients attend a minimum of 2 appointments (please see our main page on colonics for more information on this) but for those with IBS symptoms it will vary.

You will probably form a close bond with your therapist who wants to see any improvements almost as much as you do, so between the two of you, you will be able to decide the best course of action, what to expect and how to go about it.

Our patients all agree on one thing, talking about it always helps and we are always here to listen and give advice if we can.

We also offer some great books from Amazon which will give you more information about IBS, the symptoms and what you can do to help alieviate those symptoms whether you actually have IBS or not.

The Gut Trust are a UK charitable organisation who can also help manage your condition. You will find more information about their work and how they can help you HERE

The practice is within easy reach of Northampton, Milton Keynes, Kettering, Wellingborough, Rushden, Peterborough, Corby, Bedfordshire and Buckinghamshire.
